The Cotton Tree Foundation

Almost two decades ago, The Cotton Tree Foundation was established by a group of Trinidadian citizens for the benefit of the residents of Belmont, East Dry River, St Ann’s, Cascade and their environs. The Foundation was concerned about the increasing number of disadvantaged people in our society. It commissioned a community census which identified extensive poverty and high unemployment, especially among young adults, in the aforementioned areas as major focus areas.

On July 18th 2006, Kapok Hotel, in collaboration with Meiling, held a gala fashion show at Kapok’s Bois Cano Bistro and Bar, to raise funds for charity.

Titled Resort 06, Meiling’s summer collection clearly delighted the appreciative audience in the capacity-filled venue.

The show’s success generated revenues of $25,000 and on this occasion, the Cotton Tree Foundation was selected as the beneficiary in keeping with Kapok’s focus on child-centred developmental and educational activities.

Additionally, the proceeds of the hotel’s recent clearance sale, held last month and organised by the Kapok staff, netted an additional $20,000.

As a result of the funds raised from the fashion show and the clearance sale, a cheque for $45,000 was presented on August 25 by Kapok Hotel managing director Diana Cohen-Chan, and Meiling to Justice Ulric Cross, director of The Cotton Tree Foundation.

The funds are to be utilised for providing scholarships to promising students for pre-secondary education, as well as for the acquisition of computers and specialised software for remedial learning at the foundation’s Homework Club.

Justice Cross expressed his appreciation to Kapok and Meiling for their generous contribution and noted that it was corporate sponsorship that financed the ongoing activities of The Cotton Tree Foundation.
